New Satellite is turned on

This post was written by: Josh

September 2nd, 2009

As some of you may have heard, the new SIRIUS Satellite is up and running. Across the web, blogs and websites are announcing the new satellite being activated, however here at TSS-Radio, we would like to know: Has your Signal changed today/recently? Have you experienced any kind of signal strength increase?

We would like to find out from as many people possible,  how the new satellite is helping people enhance their signal-a simple way to judge is to check you SIRIUS Radio’s Signal Indicator.

Checking your SIRIUS Signal is simple and can help you diagnose any Signal issues you may have, here is how you check your signal:

1. Turn your SIRIUS Radio on

2. Press the Menu button (on some radios, you may have to press and hold the menu button to access the menu)

3. Scroll down til you see SIGNAL, SIGNAL INDICATOR, ANTENNA AIMING, or ANTENNA.

4. Select that option

5. You will now see two different gauges, One says “TER” or “T” the other is “SAT” or “S”

6. Note how many bars are filled in

The “TER” means your Terrestrial signal-basically the signal that comes from on the ground SIRIUS repeaters in your local area. The “SAT” mean Satellite signal-bascially the signal that comes from the SIRIUS Satellite orbiting overhead. The “SAT” should be the one affected with this new satellite turning on.

If you could send us your findings and the area you live in, that would be fantastic. We are curious to see the affect and what we can look to expect from the new SIRIUS Satellite. Thank You.

Review of the Jensen Docking Station and Clock Radio for I-Pod/I-Phone

This post was written by: Jimmy

August 21st, 2009

Hey everyone!

I got a chance to take the Jensen docking station and clock radio for I-Pod/I-Phone home this past week and incorporate it into my daily life.  First I must tell you that I am the guy that does not wake up to a little buzz or beep on a standard alarm clock, so when I learned I had the chance to both; charge my iPhone ( A task I rarely perform until it dies when I need it most) and wake up to blaring guitars of Van Halen’s: Eruption, I gladly took it.

The Clock/Docking station right out of the box is definitely a sight for sore eyes who are used to a standard alarm clock or in my case, one of those garfield alarm clocks I have had since I was 7. With a silver and black casing, it will sleekly blend in with all of your nightstand’s accoutrament and the bright blue LED lights are incredibly powerful to where I woke up a couple times in the wee hours of the morning and through cloudy, sand filled eyes exclaimed,”oh nice…6:30, I can sleep for another hour or so”.  Bright lights aren’t always good though for people trying to sleep, that’s why the dimmer switch on the radio provided me with a great way to sleep in on the weekend.

Speaking of sleep, the sleep function on the radio proved to be a great way to nap when I had the chance.  I would set the function for twenty minutes and have my ipod playing some ambient music, perhaps some Enya.  Within ten of those minutes, I was asleep like a baby. This combined with the fact that my radio had shut off when I asked it to, was a great feature on the Jensen piece.  Since I needed to wake up an hour later for a meeting, I set my alarm for 830pm however I didn’t need to change my normal alarm time which was 8am as the Jensen has TWO alarm settings.  The sleep and snooze functions were basic alarm clock ettiquette and worked out well for this late sleeper.  One thing I also liked is the Crescendo function of the alarm that would have me gently waking up to my tunes starting at a quiet-loud volume and not blaring like a fire alarm, starting off my day right.

Let’s get to the good stuff. You wonder, “How does it sound?”.  The answer is this.  I have used several other ipod docks and this one is hands down the best.

First off,you get no interference when using with an Iphone, UNLESS someone calls you. This can easily be avoided by switching on the airplane function with your iPhone.  The sound is brilliant. Since it has two small powered subs within, it packs a little punch yet still sounds clear and crisp with no harsh popping or distortion. I listened to everything from hip hop to country on this bad boy and had a sound comparable to any smaller bose speaker system.  One thing I will tell buyers to keep in mind is that your FM antenna placement has to be pretty well placed to avoid any static through the radio function, but this sounds great as well once you correct that.
Other features were the headphone jack/aux jack which both were pretty standard but still luxuries to have on an alarm clock, as well as an automatic time zone setting which was an added bonus.

Overall, the Jensen Clock radio and Iphone/Ipod dock is a great purchase for those of you who need a multifunctional speaker system or an alarm clock OR both!  You won’t be dissapointed in any aspect of it’s functions and will see it might be one of the best bedroom companions you will have!

Make your Grandmother Happy – Get Her SIRIUS

This post was written by: sean

August 14th, 2009

Our audience skews a bit young, afterall, the average satellite radio listener is 43 years old, and being an internet store, our average customer might be younger still.

Since we don’t think of older people and satellite radio together usually, I want to fill you in on a secret.  Your grandparents will FLIP OUT if you get them SIRIUS for a gift.  For example, take my Nana.  Satellite radio is perfect for her because she:

  1. has some time to kill, especially lately, as she has been recovering from shoulder surgery
  2. is used to listening to the radio a lot, most of her life has been spent during the years when FM radio was a major form of entertainment
  3. loves music (and news) and wants to access the ever-proliferating amount of content, but has NO PATIENCE for figuring out complicated technologies like internet radio, ipods, itunes, etc.  The genius of satellite radio for her is that it puts modern technology into a familiar interface.

I attached a voicemail message that she left me a couple days ago (on my birthday) where she talks about how much she likes the Tivoli Sirius table radio that I sent her a few weeks ago. Take a listen.

SIRIUS radio is a great gift for grandparents everywhere.

Car Antenna Review

This post was written by: Matt

August 13th, 2009

The majority of the time that most people are listening to their satellite radio is inside their car. But what gets you the best signal? Antenna placement and location on the car is key but is there an antenna that will get you better reception? Are there pros and cons of using one antenna over another? In this posting I will review each car antenna here at TSS Radio as well as include the truck antennas.

dotmicro_medium

The Sirius Mobile Antenna Dot Micro is the standard car antenna that comes with all new plug and play radios. It is the replacement antenna Sirius now uses over the older square car antenna. The mobile antenna dot micro is a round magnetic antenna with a 21 ft cable that has a higher gain than previous models. Basically, that means it can get a better reception. Upon testing I found this to be very true. The dot micro works incredibly well even with poor weather conditions or a bit of cover over it (ie: trees, overhang, etc). The only disadvantage to this antenna is that it’s wire is a fragile and not really equipped for strong weather.

tram-antenna_medium

The Tram Square Car Antenna for Sirius is a square magnetic antenna that is fairly new to us here at TSS Radio. At first glance this radio appears to be the same as the old Sirius square car antenna, but it isn’t. This antenna is designed with a thicker cable sheathing that, in theory, will improve the longevity of the antenna. The additional use of an adhesive pad that the antenna can sit on instead of using its magnetic feature is also included with this antenna. Upon testing I noticed this antenna gets just as good of a signal quality as the Mobile Antenna Dot Micro, if not better. I experienced almost no signal strength loss in poor weather conditions or even under heavy foliage. I would recommend this antenna to anyone! The only disadvantage I could see with this is hiding the wire in a vehicles weather stripping. It is so thick that it may not fit properly.

Terk-SIRMINI_medium

The Terk SIR-Mini Antenna is a magnetic antenna that can be used for older receivers. It comes with a 21 ft cable that has a FAKRA style connector that can be found on older receivers, however the FAKRA connector can be removed so that it can be used with newer receivers. Upon testing with this antenna I noticed it still gets a good quality signal, but isn’t as strong as the higher gain antennas. I would still recommend this antenna for everyday use as it will still get a good signal. As for a disadvantage., this antenna also has a very thin wire and is a bit fragile.

adhesiveant_medium

The Adhesive Car Antenna is an oval shaped antenna that has an adhesive base and rubber cable cover. It has a 21 ft cable and also comes with a FAKRA connector for use with older receivers but can be removed and used with newer receivers. During use, I noticed it works relatively the same as the Terk SIR-Mini antenna. It received a good signal but does not work as well as the higher gain antennas. This antenna is still good for normal use but also comes with a fragile thin wire that may not stand up to the elements.

Terk-Truck-Antenna_medium

The TERK SIR4 and XM4 universal truck antennas are great for all weather use on trucks and RV’s. These antennas are a mushroom style antenna that can be mirror mounted or flat surface mounted. The cable that comes with the unit is 21 ft in length and is replaceable. When I used this antenna I noticed an outstanding signal quality. I would recommend this antenna for any long hauler or RV user that can’t live without their satellite radio. I would recommend using zip ties or electrical tape to tie down the cable while it is exposed to the elements, so it does not hang loosely in the wind during travel.

Interoperable-Truck-Ant

The Interoperable Satellite Radio Truck Antenna is a universal antenna that can be used with either Sirius or XM. It is a stick style antenna that can be either mirror mounted or flat face mounted and also comes with a 21 ft replaceable antenna cable. This antenna did not work as well for me as the Terk truck antennas. The Interoperable antenna still gets a good signal but did not provide the same signal strength as the other ones. It is still a good and sturdy all weather antenna and can be used for a truck or RV that is making several long trips. And, much like the Terk antennas, I would suggest using zip ties or electrical tape to secure the wire.

Tram_Truck_Antenna_medium

The TRAM Mirror Mount Truck Antenna and TRAM Interoperable Mirror Mount Truck Antenna are designed for use on trucks and RV’s. These antennas are cylindrical in shape and smaller than other truck and RV antennas. The disadvantage to these antennas is that the 17 ft cable built into the unit cannot be replaced. Upon use of the unit I noticed that this is a very high gain antenna and performed as well as the Terk truck antennas. I would recommend this antenna to anyone and especially recommend using zip ties or electrical tape to hold down any exposed wire.

Choosing the antenna that is right for you is key. Function, durablility, and signal strength are all very important. Hopefully this outline has helped in understanding what the differences are between certain antennas and how well they will perform for you.

New Shipping Option for Light Items

This post was written by: sean

August 13th, 2009
Mail Innovations is Cheaper for Light Items

At TSS-Radio we always only used high-end shipping options – UPS and USPS Priority.  You won’t find us sending packages Parcel Post or First Class or using un-proven shippers and logistics companies, since they are not reliable enough.

However, for cheap and light products, like a satellite radio power cord, paying an additional $5 or in shipping stinks.

Yesterday we unveiled a new shipping option for that circumstance.  It is called UPS Mail Innovations that is as reliable as USPS Priority but much cheaper.

It works by having UPS deliver the package to your local post office and USPS delivers it to you.  Since UPS takes it almost all the way there, the reliability and speed are much better than similarly low-cost shipping methods from the USPS.

Mail Innovations is Cheaper for Light Items

This method is slightly slower than USPS Priority, but it still gets to most of the US within 3-4 days (green and blue areas).

Mail Innovations Transit Times

Mail Innovations Transit Times

Mail Innovations does not offer tracking, but it does offer delivery confirmation, which is almost as good.  In fact, it is the same delivery confirmation available on the more expensive USPS Priority option.  However, it’s confusing because you have to go to the USPS website, NOT the UPS website (even though this option has UPS in the name). See below for an example of what the delivery confirmation information looks like (on a test package that I sent to my home).

Hopefully this additional shipping option makes shopping at TSS-Radio more affordable and convenient.

Sad Road Trip Without SIRIUS

This post was written by: sean

Mountains and Reindeer in Colorado

Two weekends ago I went to a wedding in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.  I have been to Steamboat a few times before, but always in the winter to snowboard.  In the winter one of the biggest appeals of Steamboat over other ski areas out west is that it has a little airport about 20 miles away that has direct flights from Chicago – much nicer than driving out I-70 from DIA to get to Breckenridge or Vail.

However, in the summer there are no direct flights from Chicago to Steamboat / Hayden Airport and I had to drive up from Denver.  It’s about a 3.5 hour drive and my wife couldn’t come so I was doing it solo.  I rather like road trips and I took the long way, through Rocky Mountain National Park, which was beautiful, and spent the morning hanging out in Boulder, which I enjoyed as well.

I am really really cheap, especially when it comes to travel, especially when I’m not traveling with my wife (who is not that cheap).  So I completely skimped on the rental car and got a $20 / day rental from Hotwire.  The car itself wasn’t bad, a Carolla from Avis.  Because of the mountains I would have preferred something with a little more power.  But what really sucked is that it didn’t come with satellite radio.

I am also really spoiled since, as an owner of TSS-Radio, I have satellite in my car and home and I completely take it for granted.  After about 20 minutes of listening to FM I was seriously pissed off – the stations sucked, the reception was awful in the mountains, there were way too many commercials and the playlists were generic and boring.

More Mountains

More Mountains

In Boulder I hit up a cd store and bought 4 cds for about $50.  I was a pretty happy camper for the first two listens of each cd, or about 3 hours.  Unfortunately, between the drive there and the drive back (thanks to some horrible traffic on I-70 coming back) I had about 8 hours of driving total.

Lesson?  I should have paid the extra $10-15 to get a fancier rental car with satellite radio in it.

Buying a new Plug and play radio? Here’s a helpful guide!

This post was written by: Matt

July 28th, 2009

If you are in the market for a new plug and play satellite radio, there are a few options to choose from. The real question you have to ask yourself is, “What additional functions do I want from my satellite radio?” There are several different radios that have many different functions to use that will help you enjoy your satellite radio more. Since no two radios are alike, though some do share the same functions, it is important to know what the radio is capable of doing so you can fully experience the power of your satellite radio. Here is a brief break-down of the newest 5 series radios out now and their functions.

sp5_standard_size_medium

For the heavy satellite radio listener that has to have all the bells and whistles, the Sportster 5 is ideal for you! With it’s full color customizable screen, personalized sports tracker, 30 presets and replay functions, it is the high end of all of the satellite radios. The Sportster 5’s sports tracker is a unique feature that will constantly scan the channels and will alert you when a team or car (NASCAR) you stored in memory is playing a game or running a race, or when there is a score update for a team. This feature is unique only to the Sportster radios and cannot be found on any other radio.

starmate52_medium

Now, for the moderate satellite radio user the Starmate 5 is an ideal route to go. Much like the Sportster 5 it also has 30 presets, S-Seek alerts for your favorite artists and replay functions. The Sirius replay function is highly sought after in satellite radios because it allows you to pause, rewind, and replay up to 44 minutes of content. Also, the Starmate 5 is the only radio that supports the new A La Carte programming package from Sirius.

stratus5_medium

And finally, for the easy going no fuss, no thrills user the Stratus 5 is a simple an easy route to go. The Stratus 5 only has 10 presets and even though a remote does not come with the kit, it does have the capability of being operated by a remote (T030R). Even though it is a simple no thrills radio it is still capable of receiving the full Sirius programming and can even be subscribed to the best of XM.

It is important to note that all of the 5 series plug and play radios come with a car kit.

Shopping for  new radio can sometimes be difficult, but hopefully this simple outline of the 5 series plug and play radios will give you an idea of what to look for and expect in a radio. if you have any questions concerning any of these radios or compatibility, please feel free to contact us.
